If you work for or know of a nonprofit that needs technology assistance, help is on the way in late June, when Memphis’ second GiveCamp event takes place. GiveCamp weekend, June 22 – 24, will be at Emerge Memphis in Downtown’s Historic South Main District, and is an intensive two-day help session that brings the expertise of some of Memphis’ brightest and best in the field of technology to selected nonprofits at no cost.
GiveCamp, a worldwide organization, began in 2007 and has provided help to hundreds of charities equivalent to millions of dollars of developer and designer time. The first Memphis event was in October 2011, with a team of approximately 30 volunteers and six charities.
Software developers, designers and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for nonprofit organizations, which includes such applications as a new website, a small data-collection application to keep track of members or new interactive features on an existing website.
One organization came to last October’s event with an outdated website and a limited understanding of social media and content strategies; its leaders received consulting in those areas in addition to a new website that accommodates online donations.
Nonprofits can apply on the website and participants will be chosen on the basis of the number of available volunteer professionals. GiveCamp asks that a representative be available throughout the weekend to answer questions and clarify needs and expectations.
